How do they know

Been a lot of arrests lately of people accessing 'naughty' sites. My question is how do the authorites know? I understand that if people send credit card details to pay for access then this can be traced back but are there any other ways?

The IP. Everyone has got a IP and you can trace them back with special programs. ie. Neotrace...it shows a map and tells the city where someone lives who tried to access your pc...ect...

When they see your IP they can trace them back. Good firewalls, proxys and blocker ect. can protect your pc for giving out IP.

these sites can record ur ip and this ip is allocated to u permanently, or on a temp basis at a given time every thing is recorded
