memory stick scam

a mate of mine has been buying some memory sticks as 4GB he plugs it in and they say 4GB memory available but you can only use 1GB and its "memory full"
how the fook do they do this?

even though they are brand new and advertised as 4GB
he's tried a few and they only allow 1GB

A friend of mine said they just flash it so it shows 4GB and only has the potential of 1GB

can someone shed some light on this ?

It might be the camera. The same thing happens with Compact Flash on some early cameras they will only accept a certain maximum memory size. I would go down to a currys store and ask to try it in their camera suggesting you want to buy one but unsure if it will take 4GB or not and that you need to try it. Make sure you fill it with 1MB first though as that will be a lot of test shots you'll need to take in the shop.

I had to install a patch on my IPaq before my Sandisk memory could be used.
